Trophy: The Origin and Evolution

!±8± Trophy: The Origin and Evolution

The English word trophy is derived from the French word "trophee" and Greek word "tropaion." The Greek word "tropaion" means to rout and the French word "trophee" essentially means spoils of a war.

For the Greek the trophies started from the battlefield. The victorious team made a warrior sort of figure from the arms and standards of the defeated team. This figure was hung to a tree and it was inscribed with battle stories and was dedicated to god and later destroyed as a sacrilege. The Romans built extravagant trophies that consisted of columns and arches on top of a foundation.

Olympics, today, use medals to commemorate the winners. In ancient Greece, Olympic winners were felicitated with a laurel wreath and did not receive trophies.

Originally a trophy was shaped as a chalice and made with a wooden base, a wooden column and a metal figure. But with passing time the trends changed and wood was replaced by marble and the figures are made out of plastic and painted the desired color.

The shapes and sizes of a trophy too have evolved with time. The chalice is still used in several prominent sporting events like the Davis and the Stanley cup, but there are other interesting figurines that are being used like a stylized human for the academy awards or the Oscars and the use of a spaceship for the Hugo awards for science.

The current FIFA world cup trophy is designed by Silvio Gazzaniga and been in commission since 1974. The award depicts two human figures holding the Earth. The current trophy weighs 5 kilos and stands 36.5 centimeters tall. Both the Wimbledon and the FIFA world Cup trophy cannot be won outright, the winners of the tournament get a replica of the trophy.

No matter what the game, the trophy is what keeps the games exciting!

Mark Beevers put the hosts in front with a header from a Tommy Spurr corner before Miller doubled the lead after Liam Davis tripped Neil Mellor. Collecting FA Cup Memorabilia

!±8± Collecting FA Cup Memorabilia

The FA Cup has a long and romantic history and was dreamed up by Charles William Alcock, an old Harrovian, who played on the winning side in the first final of 1872, when Wanderers defeated the Royal Engineers. Since that first final, it has been the dream of every footballer to play in the FA Cup Final and come away with a winner's medal.

The 1937 FA Cup Final, between Sunderland and Preston North End was won 3-1 by Sunderland, with Sandy McNab having a great game. His gold winner's medal and red and white striped Sunderland shirt sold for £4,000 and £2,400 respectively in 2006. In 2004 cup final medals raised £2,000 at Budd, an auction house specializing in sporting memorabilia. The three match officials at the FA cup also receive a medal struck in silver gilt, and these quite often come up at auction and usually fetch in excess of £100.

The Football Association Challenge Trophy, to give the FA Cup its official name, is the most instantly recognizable piece of silverware in British football and has an iconic status with supporters. There are one or two very attractive collectables that have appeared over recent years, one being an impressive full-size replica produced by Portmeirion around 1980. It was the intention to market this on a commercial basis, but manufacturing costs proved too high and only a handful of replicas were made. When one was recently auctioned at Budd's it fetched £2,400.

Carlton produced a miniature replica of the trophy to commemorate the 1927 FA Cup Final, which was won by Cardiff City - this was the only time that the FA cup left England in its entire history. The Carlton miniature is valued at around £250-350.

Before the opening of Wembley Stadium in 1923 the FA Cup was staged at various venues, one being the Kennington Oval, the now defunct Crystal Palace and Chelsea FC's Stamford Bridge. Pre-Wembley memorabilia is scarce and therefore expensive. A world record price for a football programme was achieved at Budd's with a single sheet example for the 1889 final at the Oval between Preston North End and West Bromwich Albion, it went for £19,000 in May 2006. The Tottenham Hotspur v Sheffield United 1901 programme, which was played at the Crystal Palace, fetched £18,000. The final was extra special as Spurs were still a non-League team at this time and had managed to beat all professional clubs they encountered on their way to the trophy.

As the competition became more popular companies began to produce advertising material inspired by the cup, in order to boost sales. There was an illustrated vesta case produced by Coleman's Mustard to commemorate Bradford City's 1911 FA Cup final win and this was sold at Budd's for £300 in 2005.

Wembley Stadium hosted the first FA Cup on 28 April 1923, between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham. Wembley Stadium was then the largest football arena in the world and could hold 100,000 spectators. With this capacity it was thought not necessary to allocate tickets, which was a decision that came back to haunt the organisers. The game was massively oversubscribed and probably most people have seen the images of the policeman mounted on a white horse. The 1923 FA Cup Final has been known over since as the 'White Horse Final'. An original newspaper depicting the scenes was recently sold for £400. Memorabilia for the 1923 final is much in demand and an illustrated match programme was recently sold at Budd's for £950, while an unused match ticket achieved a hammer price of £2,000.

Because of the chaos of the 1923 final much more attention was paid to safety and stewarding. If you want to start collecting FA Cup memorabilia, the enamelled steward badges, issued for each final, are a good entry level. The tradition of community singing before kick-off began in 1927 and there was a song sheet issued with each match programme detailing the schedule and words. These songsheets have been overlooked in the past, but are now becoming popular with collectors and a 1927 song sheet fetched £400 at Budd's.

One of the most famous finals is the 1953, Coronation Year FA Cup Final. The great Stanley Matthews had been on the losing side in two finals and at last got his winner's medal after a great match, where Blackpool beat Bolton Wanderers 4-3. A limited edition print of the 'Matthews Final' was produced and signed by Sir Stanley shortly before his death in 2000. This would sell at auction for around £100.

Tradition is that the winning side of the FA Cup Final hold a celebration banquet at a top London hotel on the evening of the match. The menus produced for this are very popular collectables and if you can get an autographed menu, it would enhance the value. A menu signed by the great Tottenham Hotspur team of the 1960s sold at Budd's for around £650.

With the opening of the new Wembley future collectors will be hunting down memorabilia of the first FA Cup Final played there.

The trophy will finally be presented to the team who wins the NHL Playoffs and in 2009 it was the Pittsburgh Pirates who achieved this. Their captain Sidney Crosby is the youngest captain to ever being presented with this trophy at the time he was 21 years old.

3. The Jules Rimet Trophy - It was originally known as the Coupe de Monde but in 1930 the world governing body of football FIFA chose to rename it after the chairman of the organization at the time. This newly named trophy was then presented to Uruguay after winning the final in 1930. However since the first presentation this trophy has been stolen twice the first time in 1966 prior to commencement of the World Football competition in England and then again in 1983. However as the trophy was not found following the second theft a replica was made and then presented to Brazil by FIFA as they had won the title for the third time in 1970.

4. Football World Cup - Following the Brazilian football team being presented with the Jules Rimet Trophy replica, FIFA chose to commission a new trophy. The first team to be presented with this new trophy was Germany who won the competition in 1974. 5. The European Cup - This is the most important trophy for football teams that play in the various leagues across Europe. As well as having to compete against teams from their own country they are also having to compete with others from across Europe. 8. Wimbledon Men's Singles Trophy - This trophy for the sport of tennis was first presented back in 1887 and of all the trophies associated with this sport it is the one that most people around the world can recognize easily. 9. The Ashes - This is a trophy that involves just two teams namely the England and Australian cricket teams but is still a very important trophy to include in this list. Of all the trophies or awards that we look at in this list this one is the smallest. The team that wins the competition is presented with a small wooden urn which must be returned so it can be kept safe in the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) museum. To compensate for having to return the real trophy the winning team is also presented with a larger crystal version of it.

Columbus Blue Jackets Facts

!±8± Columbus Blue Jackets Facts

The Blue Jackets are a young team, founded as an expansion team in 2000 and not qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs until 2009. When the Cleveland Barons left Ohio in 1978, no one knew that it would take 22 years before the state would host another NHL team. On June 25, 1997, the NHL announced that Columbus would receive a new franchise; a decision prompted by the May 31 announcement from Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company that they would foot the bill for a new 0-million arena in Columbus.

The name and logo of the Blue Jackets are rooted in Ohio's rich Civil War history and was choose to celebrate patriotism, pride and the rich Civil War history in the state of Ohio. When President Abraham Lincoln asked Ohio to raise ten regiments at the outbreak of the Civil War, the Ohio residents responded by forming no less than 23 volunteer infantry regiments.

The team logo is a stylized version of the flag of Ohio swirled around a start while the sweaters sport a Civil War cap with crossed hockey sticks. The official team mascot is a 6 foot 9 inch bright green bug named Stinger that can be seen walking among the spectators during the games and skating around on the ice between periods wearing a team jersey.

At the request of the fans, the Blue Jackets organization purchased a hand-made replica of an 1867 Napoleon cannon and placed it in the Nationwide Arena as the 2007-08 season begun. Since then, the Blue Jacket cannon has been fired at the start of all home games. The cannon will also salute each time the team scores a home goal and when the home team wins a game. During its inaugural season, it was fired no less than 164 times.

The cannon has become an integral part of Blue Jacket fan culture. The cannon is loaded with smoke flash charges and the loud boom is produced by a .75oz concussion explosive placed above the rink. When the cannon is fired, the accompanying music "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You) by AC/DC can be heard throughout the arena.

As mentioned above, the Blue Jackets secured their first Stanley Cup Playoff berth ever in 2009 by defeating the Chicago Blackhawks with 4-3 on April 8. The team had made several advantageous trades during the 2008 off season, including getting Raffi Torres in exchange for Gilbert Brule and trading Nikolai Zherdey and Dan Fritsche to the New York Rangers in exchange for Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman. During the 2008-09 NHL season Jason Williams was received in exchange for Clay Wilson and a sixth-round draft pick. The team also became a part of the first major deal of the 2009 NHL Trade Deadline by receiving Antoine Vermette from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Pascal Leclaire and a second-round draft pick.
